Why "Real Returns" Matter More Than the Big Number

Open almost any SIP calculator in India and you'll see one large, satisfying figure — your projected corpus after 15, 20, or 25 years. What most calculators leave out is what actually happens to that number by the time it reaches your bank account. Two forces quietly eat into it every single time: Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on your withdrawal, and inflation, which erodes what that money can actually buy by the time you retire or hit your goal. SIPtruth.com was built to put both of those front and centre, alongside the nominal number, so your investment plan is based on what you'll really have — not just what looks good on a screen.

Here's the mechanics in plain terms. As per the current tax rules, equity mutual fund gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year are taxed at 12.5% when you redeem long-term holdings. That tax doesn't show up in a standard "nominal corpus" figure — it only shows up when you actually withdraw. Separately, inflation (which we default to a realistic 6% a year, adjustable in the calculator) means ₹1 crore two decades from now buys meaningfully less than ₹1 crore does today. Stack both adjustments together, and the gap between the "headline" number and your real, spendable, inflation-adjusted, post-tax number can easily run into several lakhs — sometimes more, depending on your SIP size and horizon. Our calculator above shows all three figures side by side, so you can see that gap directly instead of discovering it later.

The same honesty principle applies to our EMI calculator: beyond the standard EMI figure, it models how prepayments actually shorten your loan and cut total interest, and our SIP vs Loan comparison tool lets you weigh — with real numbers, not guesswork — whether extra monthly cash is better used investing or paying down debt faster. None of this is investment advice; it's a way to see the arithmetic clearly so you can make your own informed call, ideally alongside a qualified financial advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my SIP show ₹1 crore in hand if the calculator projects ₹1 crore?

Because that ₹1 crore is the nominal, pre-tax figure. Once you redeem, LTCG tax applies to gains above the ₹1.25 lakh annual exemption, and inflation has already reduced what that money is worth in today's terms. Our "Real Picture" panel breaks out all three numbers so you know your actual take-home value in advance.

Is a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) the same as a lump sum investment?

No. A SIP invests a fixed amount at regular intervals (usually monthly) into a mutual fund, which averages your purchase cost over time — a concept known as rupee-cost averaging. A lump sum invests the full amount at once. Both are modelled differently for tax purposes since each SIP instalment is treated as a separate investment with its own holding period.

Should I prepay my loan or invest the extra amount in a SIP instead?

It depends on your loan's interest rate versus your expected SIP returns, your risk appetite, and your time horizon. Our SIP vs Loan tool runs both scenarios side by side using your actual numbers, so you can compare the interest you'd save against the corpus you'd likely build — rather than relying on a generic rule of thumb.

Are the figures on this site exact?

No — they're illustrative estimates based on the inputs you provide and standard formulas for compounding, EMI amortisation, and LTCG tax. Actual returns depend on market performance, fund selection, and expense ratios that vary by scheme. Always cross-check with your CA or financial advisor before acting on any numbers here.
